My atheism cannot hold back the joy I feel about architecture of a godly nature. Though I wish it were not so, their ancient greed has given us some of the most beautiful things to look at. Their intrinsic need for affirmation, as they bribe the heathens in with their gothic style, makes them appear nothing but human.

Auf etwas mehr als 300 Seiten kann zwar nur ein knapper Überblick über mehrere tausend Jahre Architekturgeschichte gegeben werden. Doch nicht die Detailfülle ist das Ziel dieses Werks, sondern das kurze Schlaglicht auf herausragende Bauwerke. Ausgezeichnete Fotografien, prägnante Texte.

Kathedralen by Parragon Books
Der reich (und in überwiegend sehr guter Qualität) bebilderte Band vermittelt einen Eindruck von rund 240 ausgewählten Kirchenbauten aus einer Zeitspanne von 1700 Jahren. Dass dabei im Text jeweils nur sehr kurz auf baugeschichtliche Details eingegangen wird, lässt das Buch zumindest als guten Einstieg in die Materie geeignet erscheinen.
