Young, Black, Rich and Famous: The Rise of the NBA, The Hip Hop Invasion and the Transformation of American Culture by Todd Boyd
If you would like a strong background on modern basketball, and how race played a role on and off the basketball court, then Young, Black, Rich and Famous by Todd Boyd is a good book for you to read. Allen Iverson played for the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1970s, the narrator would wear his jersey around town and would get rude comments. Well, the reason he got rude looks and comments was because, Allen Iverson was labeled as a “wife beater” , the narrator thought they were talking to his show more tank top he was wearing because, that's what people referred to as a wife beater back then. Basketball in the ‘70s/early ‘80s was basically made up of black people. They talk about how basketball isn’t just one set position like baseball and other sports. show less
Culturally Responsive Teaching: Engaging Middle School Students Through World Music and Drumming by Todd Boyd
Abstract
Music Explorations Through World Music and Drumming is a curriculum and handbook that
was created for a semester long middle school general music class. It was designed to be
culturally responsive for a racially and socioeconomically diverse student body. Topics covered
in the curriculum included: student music identity, the history of African American Music, music
of West Africa, and the music of the Caribbean.
Over 40 books and materials were collected as a way to generate ideas for show more units and
lessons. Will Schmid’s (2015) World Music Drumming: A Cross-Cultural Curriculum was
chosen as the anchor source for the course. A master curriculum map, unit PowerPoint
presentations, student unit packets, and assessments were all created for the course. Materials
were assembled into a curriculum handbook. The curriculum has been taught and refined over
six semesters. show less
