Some time ago, I read and remember finding useful information in Rosemary Verey's [The Garden in Winter]. I purchased [A Countrywoman's Year] in hopes of finding more of the same. This volume, however, disappointed. It is a short collection of paragraphs, perhaps diary entries, recounting life at her Gloucestershire home. Although dated 1989, most of the writing seems to have been compiled from the 1970s and includes notes on weather, calendar lore, garden pests and the continued development show more of the rural English countryside. No particular themes emerged from the collection, nor is there any specific gardening advice. The author's rambling ruminations were a quick, but largely unsatisfying, read. show less
The author notes the inadequacy of words to describe scent, and the fact that although we word the deaf and blind, we have no word for one who has lost the sense of smell. Although not as necessary, the sense is filled with variety and wonder.

The text is rich in botanical lore and history, with many color photographs and drawings. Entire sections are devoted to Roses; Annuals biennials and perennials; Bulbs, corms and tubers; Herbs; Shrubs, trees and climbers; and Fragrant exotica. With show more Appendix -- green colored pages listing "plants with scented leaves", "scented flowers", and plants that scent for seasons and hours, plants for cutting, indoor gardens, and outdoor tubs. show less
