This was wonderfully dumb! Even though the premise is silly, it still outlines some basic science fiction theories, like time paradoxes, in a simple way for kids.

I would read more in this series. Hairball is my favorite!

In this middle grade graphic novel, Ham Helsing is the latest in a long line of ill-fated vampire hunters. As he goes about trying to hunt down a vampire, he makes some friends, including some quite unexpected ones. On paper this sounded *exactly* my kind of thing (a comic about an anthropomorphic pig who hunts vampires and there's a pun in the title? Gimme.), but it didn't quite work for me. Most people have some type of family legacy, even if it is just everyone’s an accountant. For Ham, his family legacy is being vampire hunters, who die prematurely. Before you double check if this is a kid’s book, yes it is. Think of the deaths like Gen X roadrunner and Coyote hijinks. Ham’s older brother Chad when off on his adventure and never returned. Ham has no desire to follow in the family footsteps, but he must and throughout his adventure he makes readers laugh, look at classic show more stories in a new and crazy ways, as well learning that people are not always what they seem. I reviewed this graphic novel with my seven year old grandson, who loved it. He quickly became engrossed with the illustrations and characters, finding the story easy to follow on his own, with characters he cared about. The story of Ham and his friends running their camp when no staff showed up was hilarious to Will, and although he's pretty easily scared, the monsters were funny instead of too creepy. He has been pestering me about finding #1 and finding out when #3 will be published, so show more we'll be letting his school library and local bookstore know. show less
