My five year old loves this book, and so do I. It teaches children that just because they like something others say they shouldn't doesn't make them any less what they are. Confusing? This book lays it out so easily for kids to "get." Jet the cat likes to sing, so they're probably a bird. But they can't fly! Jet like's to prance, but they don't have a beard like a goat...and in the end, all of these other animals like or are things that aren't typical to that animal! Some birds run instead show more of fly; some goats don't have a beard; some frogs are soprano! I love this book so much, and I get excited whenever Dexter chooses to read this one at night! :) show less
Ok, this one just hit me perfectly. The theme has been done so many times before, but never quite like this. There's humor, there's a textual pattern, there's empowerment, there's a surprise ending, and it's all done in a way that will help younger children appreciate it.
Usually this kind of "you can't do that" or "real -blanks- don't do that" doesn't start until school, right? Read this, and converse about it, with your little one the summer before, and whether they are more like Jet or show more more like Tom they'll be reading for the name-callers on the playground. show less
