I never expect not much for encyclopaedic works like this that aim to cover-off everything you need to know as an Australian Gardener. However, I was impressed with this book. First, it covers most of the issues one encounters with gardening: from design, layout, to planting, building steps, patios, flower gardens, vegetable gardens, pest protection etc. So very thorough ..even if the coverage might be a bit skimpy. (For example, I have several whole books just devoted to plant diseases and show more insects etc). Also, it is beautifully laid out and enhanced by lovely photographs.....a huge number of lovely photographs.
I especially liked the section about garden design with it's focus on the various types of garden : Contained gardens, family gardens, Leisure gardens, Edible gardens, and Enthusiast's gardens. Also, I liked the section about design principles: forming a structure, Focal points, Graduating heights, Planting in drifts,Using ground covers, Natural fillers, Colour and texture etc.
I probably wouldn't have paid the full price for this because it was an expensive book but i picked up a copy at the local market for a song...so this made it irresistible. And I am pleased that I did. I'm debating whether to award it 4 or 5 stars. But probably come down on 5 stars. show less
