An absolutely stunningly illustrated book about the beautiful New Zealand kokako, our largest songbird, and how it is being saved from extinction. The book includes a well laid out contents page; detailed map of past and present locations in New Zealand; the history behind the birds; a profile of introduced predators with a timeline of their arrival in New Zealand; information about the Kokako Recovery Group; how the Kokako are caught and moved from one location to another; the importance of show more the proper song to mating birds; the true story of Geordie Murman's successful quest to save ten kokako from the chainsaws of a logging company and what you can do to help. Also included is an index, glossary, resources list, photograph credits, map and illustration credits as well as the Maori myth of Maui and the birds. An exceptional book, a gift to New Zealand and a must have for people who treasure wildlife. Fantastically well done. show less
Hiriwa is a young Maui's dolphin. He has been warned to stay away from the dangerous dark shapes (fishing boats), but one day a bottom-set gillnet from a fishing trawler catches his friends. He desperately tries to save his friends: Spotty the snapper, Squiggles the octopus and Puru the Blue penguin.
On the last page there is information about why Maui's dolphins are so endangered. A good book but the illustrations were a bit too 'computer generated' for me and the text a little long. The show more story as a whole just didn't seem to come together as well as it could have, but the potential is definitely there. show less

Very useful overview of the political system in New Zealand for upper primary and intermediate, junior secondary. Nicely designed, easy to read, a short biography on most double spreads of relevant people.
