The wreck of the Maid of Athens : being the journal of Emily Wooldridge, 1869-1870 by Emily Wooldridge
This is an amazing account for many reasons, only one of them being that the author was a woman. It is very readable, and gives us a true telling of both a ship journey and a shipwreck and aftermath. Emily had promised her husband that she would not telegraph her feelings to the crew and she was as good as her word, not even crying until after safety was in sight, unlike other members of the crew. Keeping such a complete diary during such a trying ordeal was not accomplished by stalwart show more captains who went on less strenuous journeys. That makes this a rare gem of a book. Cool woodcuts by Laurence Irving. Interesting forward explaining how the diary came to be published, too. show less
