The Invisible Sentence: A fascinating memoir from the wife of a prisoner and how her family survived outside the prison wire by Verna McFelin
The Invisible Sentence by Verna McFelin is an extraordinary Christian memoir that will stay with me for a long time. McFelin’s gripping account of her life, after her husband’s arrest for kidnapping, is stirring, enthralling and inspirational.
To this day, Verna’s husband Paul doesn’t know what prompted him to get involved with a kidnapping. The young girl was returned unharmed, but Paul and others were arrested, and sentenced to jail in New Zealand. The crime hit the headlines, and show more soon the whole country was talking about it. Up until that moment, Verna’s life had been pretty normal. Nothing would ever be ‘normal’ again. Free-falling into poverty and shame, Verna’s life no longer feels like her own. Watching her children struggle with the stigma of having a criminal father, Verna only has one place to turn – and that is God. Scriptures come alive in her life as God take’s her by the hand and leads her on the path of righteousness, faith and love. Turning her sorrow into joy, God uses her years of need and struggle to help others. What happens as her life unfolds is miraculous as God places under her feet one miracle after another. I have been totally inspired by this memoir, and I admire McFelin for trusting God and starting a movement that has been helping the children of criminals for thirty-eight years now. This one certain line at the end of the book really got me: ‘Mentor these children and we could halve the nation’s crime rate in ten years.’
Verna McFelin’s account of her life is told smoothly while she effortlessly pulls the reader into her engaging, gripping and inspirational story. Her life of hardship and poverty is laced with the reality of God’s love, and filled with expressions of her love for the Lord, her children and the multiple people she meets and supports along the way. I enjoyed this book so much I devoured it in one day! It is absolutely fascinating, packed with Christian lessons and is an extremely inspiring read. The Invisible Sentence by Verna McFelin comes very highly recommended!! show less
