A "homey" story, of a simple small-town Minnesota woman, which opens with Charlotte sitting on her front porch rocking and wondering what to do now that her ill father has died. She applied for a job caring for an injured teen girl on a ranch in Montana. As the story progresses, there is very little interaction with the teen, and more about Charlotte's interactions with the other adults. She is always noticing the men's appearances and telling herself to calm down. She is talked into riding show more a horse, fearful as it has been 8 years since her last experience. Brown tries to inject new experiences into the tale, but her imagination is fairly limited, and Charlotte is boring.
I suppose I should look at this book as a butterfly breaking free from a limiting coccoon, but in the end she is still going to be a housewife. show less
