Short biography
Church historian. He was born in New York City. Hardy received his B.A. in 1923, his M.A. in 1924, and his Ph.D. in 1931, all from Columbia University. In 1933 he received his S.T.B. from General Theological Seminary. He was ordained deacon on Dec. 21, 1929, and priest on June 18, 1932. From 1929 until 1945, he was fellow, tutor, and instructor at General Seminary. In 1945 he joined the faculty of the Berkeley Divinity School as associate professor of church history. From 1947 until 1969, Hardy was professor of church history at Berkeley, and from 1969 to 1975, he was lecturer in early church history at Cambridge University. He served on a number of ecumenical commissions, and in 1942 he was president of the American Society of Church History. He was also a leading specialist on Eastern Orthodoxy, and a widely published scholar. Hardy died in Cambridge, England.
