Short biography
Margaret Ayer (1894–1981) was an American children's book author and a book illustrator. Born in New York City in 1894, she was the daughter of Dr. Ira Ayer and Louise Foster Ayer, and spent much of her childhood in Mexico and the Philippines, where she traveled with her parents and developed an interest in art. She was educated at the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Arts, and studied privately in Paris. She was a member of the Artists Guild of New York, the Asia Society, the Society of Illustrators, and the Women's National Book Association. She was married to Alfred Babbington Smith, a banker. She died in Castro Valley, California, in 1981.
