Interesting idea, but the overall result was something of a disappointment. It's a vague narrative, nothing like an academic treatment of the subject and definitely short on illustration. At the end the reader is also left with the impression that graffiti is an East Anglian feature and it's not at all clear if this is because of the medieval graffitists, a selection bias from survival, or just the book's author.
