Far far too much story for the amount of pages -- there's just no way to fit ghost story and townsfolkiness and deception and five years' growth and backstory and Indian wars and historical setup and child abuse and sexual manipulation, and I'm probably forgetting something, into 150 pages -- but the author does an admirable job of the love stor(ies), at least.
Or maybe I just have a Thing for mismatched relationships built on mutual admiration. & boys who finally come home.

This story definitely kept my interest. I learned much about the Native American tribes and some of their habits and rituals. I particularly liked the parts where the main character was comparing personalities of white women to the women in his tribe.
What I didn’t learn much about, however, was the actual code talking. Most of the book was about the main characters’ other experiences. Since there is a second book, it’s possible it’s dealt more with in the second book.
There were also show more a few other plotlines that didn’t have conclusions. show less

Not sure why I tried to read this. An LFL find that somehow looked interesting at the time? In any case, I quickly found that it's not for me. May 2023
