Keeping things light and fun but with a sigh-worthy string of truth, these poems will have dog fans smiling, nodding, snorting, and gazing over at their favorite pup.

This is a collection of poems surrounding dogs and all of their wonderful (and not so wonderful) attributes. The poems stick to a light, humorous tone and flow very nicely. Some are written from a dog's perspective (with a little imagination, obviously), and others are from a human's perspective. Each one is accompanied by a show more fitting, simple illustration of a dog to round off the atmosphere.

From the first poem on, a smile was plastered on my face. So many small attributes of dogs are touched upon and the truth ringing behind them is one dog-knowers will appreciate. Yet, the poems are very well suited for this younger reading level...and they'll catch the silliness and meaning too. It makes each poem go by easily and enjoyably. Several are sure to become favorites to read again and again.

This book not only makes a lovely read-aloud for group settings but also works nicely for cuddling up in a chair with and enjoying. Those readers, who have a pretty good grip on words can grab it up on their own. Don't be surprised if you catch yourself reading some of these to your own dog, too. Oh, and the last poem adds a cute twist!

What a delightful picture book! If you are looking for a very simplistic read to highlight how wonderful differences are to a child, don't skip this one. Not only are differences everywhere (people, animals, etc.), but it's okay!
(Picture Book 2) This is one of my all-time favorite books! I love the message it sends and the creative way in which it promotes that instead of "making a mistake" it is a chance for you to make a "beautiful oops". For example instead of a rip of paper ruining a project, it can become the mouth of an alligator. Or spilled paint can be turned into an animal. It takes all sorts of art "mistakes" and finds creative ways to turn them into something new. I ALWAYS read this book at the beginning show more of the year and then use the term "beautiful oops" for the rest of the year. I love to see students just say "oh I'lll just make a beautiful oops" if they make something they consider to be a mistake. It takes the pressure off of kids who think they have to do things perfectly-- and not just art but other subjects too! show less
Barney Saltzberg’s collection of 28 dog-related poems is a relatable ode to dog ownership with a tone reminiscent of Shel Silverstein. The poems are split pretty evenly between the perspective of dog and human that touch on topics like shedding, drooling, and barking. Anyone with a dog can relate to the many quirks Saltzberg poeticizes, and his charming illustrations do a great job of showing off the unique personalities of our beloved pets. My favorite poem was “Slowing Down” which show more offers a reflection on how difficult it can be to watch our pets age. However, the subsequent and final poem is a silly nod to cat lovers. Any animal-loving student will likely enjoy this book of poems. I’d give it a 4 out of 5 stars. show less
