There's no way to say this a great comic; it barely qualifies as good (it has a few unique ideas that push it into that category). Still, I'm fanboy enough to enjoy all the characters crashing into each other, even if most of the match ups aren't given enough time.
A graphic novel compilation of a joint series of comic books between DC and Marvel. I would have liked this a lot more when I was a kid, because the story line is fairly bloated and convoluted, but the cool thing is that it does involve heroes (and some villains) of the DC and Marvel universes opposing each other, and wonder of wonders, there are actually definitive winners and losers! This would have been so cool in the days when I was debating if Superman could take the Hulk. Other show more matchups include Batman vs. Bullseye, Batman vs. Captain America, Wonder Woman vs. Storm, Wolverine vs. Lobo, Captain America vs. Bane, Thor vs. Captain Marvel, Sub-Mariner vs. Aquaman, Flash vs. Quicksilver, Robin vs. Jubilee, Green Lantern vs. Silver Surfer, Spider-Man vs. Superboy, and Catwoman vs. Elektra. The contests, while short, are between fairly evenly-matched contenders, and are about as interesting as it ever gets in a contrived story of this sort. show less
Following the story line two "gods" becoming aware of each other and deciding to pit their heroes against each other, the epic also spawned the Amalgam Universe, in which characters from both "worlds" were combined to make new heroes - my personal favorite being Dark Claw (Batman & Wolverine). This also means that while the epic is presented in full - the battles plus the resolving of the two universes - it also lacks the Amalgam comics that followed. And while these comics are available in show more collections, I opted out from reading them - I remember a few titles were not to my liking.
As for the book? Well, it's a must have for comic book geeks everywhere - especially if you grew up in the 90's. As for literary significance, well, is there anyway to say this correctly? Don't try to destroy your brother? I dunno. I really don't know. show less
