Just what I was looking for, this book had several thick chapters about the different cross-cutting cleavages that changed between 1750 and 1830: religion, economics, militarism, Whiggism, travel accounts, and the Romantics. Really great quality information, and well-cited, providing other sources to explore. Glad I happened to see this in Powell's!

An excellent but slightly academic discussion of how the early Highland regiments were responsible for transforming the image of all Highlanders from Jacobite rebel to Imperial hero during the latter half of the 18th century.
