Short biography
[excerpted from Cornish College of the Arts website]
Ed Fotheringham has made freelance illustration his sole occupation for over 25 years. After earning a BFA in Painting at the University of Washington School of Art, Ed began doing irreverent illustration work on the side — posters, album packaging, t-shirts — for college friends starting rock bands. Clients have been diverse—from local music luminaries Mudhoney to international legends Bob Dylan, Diana Krall, and Elvis Costello; to periodicals like The New Yorker, NY Times, LA Times, MIT Technology Review, Vanity Fair, and Better Homes & Gardens; to publishers Chronicle Books, Taschen, HarperCollins, and Random House and retail establishments like Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Holt Renfrew, and Starbucks; to advertising firms like McCann Erickson/NY, TBWA\Chiat\Day, and DDB Needham and record labels like Verve, Sony Music, Sub Pop, and Universal Music. Since 2008, Ed has also illustrated children's picture books for Scholastic Press, HarperCollins, PenguinRandomHouse, Little Brown and Company, and Calkins Creek.

Filled with alliteration and lively food puns, this is the juicy tale of John Nix, tomato importer who ran into problems with Customs officer Edward Hedden in 1886: Nix claimed his tomatoes were a fruit, but Hedden said they were a vegetable, and therefore subject to a tarriff. Six years later, the case was before the Supreme Court, who decided, despite some compelling arguments, that tomatoes were....a vegetable!

Real history and a lesson in lawsuits, import taxing/tariffs, debating, and what does it mean to be a vegetable or fruit. Good classroom material with high learning potential.
The illustrations by Edwin Fotheringham are imaginative, attention-getting, delightfully colorful, and FUN!
Well suited for reading WITH someone any age from 7 and up, including ESL, and great for gifting to a school, teacher, or your local public library!
