One cannot be responsible for the actions of another. I am not responsible for the sins of my ancestors. Only they can atone for what they did. But the context of their actions has remained unatoned for and even unrecognized by the European American community all these years and has contributed to the racism that infects the world in which I live. This context lays upon my shoulders a responsibility to my society and to my descendants to work for a new world. I am called into accountability show more to work for that new world.

That's what Collier engages in this powerful work, researching and uncovering as best as he is able from this vantage point the particular ways in which his ancestors participated in the enslavement of other people and the many ways in which slavery, on a societal level, has been justified, excused, and denied, right up to the present day. If we are to address the racism that continues within this society, we must look clear-eyed at our history and be ready to take responsibility. This is an important contribution to the work.
