- In 1942 he volunteered for the R.A.F., but was invalided out in 1944 after his parents had been killed and himself injured in a bomb incident in London. In the season 1945/46 he gaind a blue and subsequently played rugby for the Harlequins and Warwickshire. Published his first novel, "Dark to the Sun" at age 22.
