State of the Union: A Century of American Labor - Revised and Expanded Edition (Politics and Society in Modern America) by Nelson Lichtenstein
Labor unions have played a major role in American history. Labor activism by unions are responsible for many of the benefits American workers enjoy today. The early history of unions was very dramatic, including violent confrontations between workers and employers.
Lichtenstein's book spends little time discussing the early history of unions and, instead, focusses on how unions and labor have evolved since WW II up until the Obama Administration. Although less dramatic a story, the story he show more tells is equally important. His book provides a useful review of how unions have evolved. show less
