An intriguing and solid mystery rich with culture and a sense of place.

The Kimono Tattoo was an excellent puzzler, rich with the sense of Japanese culture and the moody, atmospheric setting of Kyoto. I was fascinated by the discussion of kimonos integral to the plot.

Ruth Bennett is a likable protagonist. The author developed an intriguing backstory for her, and I was immediately drawn to her. She melded so well into her life in Japan – more comfortable in Japan than in the U.S. I liked how show more Ruth pointed out the differences in customs and personal interactions between her native country and Japan.

She has a variety of friends, acquaintances, and coworkers who are introduced and pulled into her search for answers. I loved how they came from such different areas of Kyoto life, but all formed a wonderful group as the story progressed.

The story is not all peace and beauty and kimonos, though. The Kimono Tattoo is a pretty dark murder mystery, and the author shows what's lurking in the shadow. Some of the findings are grim and deal with tough subjects. Ruth gets in some situations that put me on the edge of my seat.

I listened to the audiobook edition of the book and enjoyed the narrator's performance immensely. Theresa Bakken's pace, pronunciation, and inflections were just right, and her variations in voice to represent different characters were subtle yet very effective. I found myself looking for errands to run (to listen in the car) despite the price of gas at the moment.

I recommend THE KIMONO TATTOO to readers who would enjoy a good, solid, exciting mystery set in modern-day Japan.

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving an Advanced Review Copy from the publisher through "NetGalley."

What a great audiobook! It's a bit dark and violent in spots but the mystery is good, the history is fascinating and the story absolutely draws you in! I really liked Ruth, our MC. She's a translater and has spent most of her life in Japan. She feels more at home there than anywhere else. She's translated a few books that have really fascinated her, one about Japanese kimonos - the history about them, the beautiful designs and the way they can tell a story. So when she receives word of show more translateing another book manuscript, this one for famous but mysterious author, she's intrigued and a bit excited. But the chapters, brutal and bloody, soon become reality and she's not sure why she's drawn in to this game.

The history was intermixed and so fascinating. The writing is fast-paced, I kept wanting to start the audio and keep going, wanting to know more and more. The narrator is good, not taking away from the story but adding to the experience. I really enjoyed this one.

A huge thank you to the author and publisher for providing an audiobook ARC via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.

The Kimono Tattoo by Rebecca Copeland is an interesting mystery thriller set in Japan. The plot , definitely, starts with a bang, and flows smoothly all the way to the middle. But, after that I felt that the plot was unnecessarily being stretched. There were some mind blowing thrills in the plot, but eventually everything was too slow for me towards the end. Also, I got totally confused with the characters and their Japanese names. May be the book was not for me.

I would like to give the book show more 3 stars. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with an opportunity to read and review the audiobook. show less
Well written. Good flow. Fast read but the motive of the murder is a bit far fetched as is the love interest and ending.
