Having grown up in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Parkway, I sometimes think I've seen it all, but I keep going back. Every season is different and our most ancient mountains are always new. Obviously, since this is the third edition, others have found the Guide to the Blue Ridge Parkway helpful. Even someone familiar with the Parkway needs a little help locating a certain waterfall by the mile marker and this is just the guide. So, if you're zipping along from Craggy Gardens, over the Viaduct show more or on to the Shenandoah Valley, this book will be indispensable. Just keep it under 45 mph, too much zipping makes the Park Rangers testy and you may just miss seeing something wonderful. show less

Won through LibraryThing's Early Reviewers. I'll start my review by saying I have not personally hiked any of the trails listed in this book. Hiking Tennessee offers a lot of helpful and interesting information about each hike and the surrounding area. It walks you through each trail listing distances and mile markers as well as directions to get to the trailhead, difficulty level, hours the trail is open and any available facilities or permits required. Although all the hikes listed are day show more hikes, many could easily be extended.
As with Hiking Ohio by the same company- I feel that a difficulty rating of 2/5 for a hike that is 90% boardwalk and less than 2 miles is inaccurate. I can only speculate that the book is not geared towards avid hikers.
Also as with Hiking Ohio, I love the chart in the beginning of the book that allows easy reference of parks, trail names, trail distance, difficulty and amenities. It makes it easy to quickly find a destination. Overall, this is a great book for anyone who enjoys hiking. show less

Early Reviewer Book. Very informative book about hiking trails in Tennessee. This book is well organized and very informative. There are state parks in the book that I had never heard of so I am eager to check them out. The location maps are good but if I was hiking the individual trails, I would want a more detailed map which you can get at each park. Overall, good material.

Victoria Steele Logue, Where was this wonderful "not so little" book 30 years ago when I was wandering Tennessee, finding out-of-the-way hikes in the beauty of that state? If you live in or a are intent on visiting Tennessee, this book is perfect for finding day hikes wherever you go in the state. While largely centered on State Parks, this also includes recreational areas and some trail segments. These are day hikes, not through hikes, ranging form about 1-5 miles in general. A great show more planning book, this guide has full page maps which can be scanned or photocopied. It's a bit big and clunky for a day pack, so I challenge Ms. Logue and Human Kinetics to to shrink the book a bit, use lighter weight paper and make it day pack material. I find that in general Human Kinetic books are useful, informative, well referenced and trustworthy as information sources. So get out and hike Tennessee! Oh yes - Don't forget this guide book! show less
