Steve Cuzor

This is an African American spin on Monuments Men, with the action amped up closer to Saving Private Ryan levels and a hit of National Treasure added for spice. And yet it is dull as dirt.

During World War II, a North Carolina college student named Johanna Bolton discovers the Revolutionary War diary of a Black woman who altered Betsy Ross' very first American flag by sneaking a black star representing all African Americans under one of the thirteen white stars. Somehow dominoes fall and show more Bolton's brother who has been serving in support positions in the U.S. military in England is attached to the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives program with his two closest buddies to track down the flag which has made its way to German-occupied France by way of a Hessian mercenary.

Everything in the plot seems highly unlikely, the dialogue is wooden, and the ending is just awful. Possibly in an attempt to make up for the flatness of the characters in the script, the artist seems to draw the three soldiers with the likenesses of Denzel Washington, Forest Whitaker, and Sammy Davis, Jr.

Despite the focus on American race relations, the work is created by what look like a couple of white Belgian dudes. This originally appeared in print in French but I find no translator credited on this edition. I'm going to assume Edward Gauvin because he seems to translate all the boring French graphic novels I read. show less

A visually impressive adaptation of the classic novel!

The script though, feels a little shallow, perhaps missing the meat of the novel's language and soul. Of course, it's been thirty-five years since I've read the original novel, so I could be misremembering, but I flipped through my copy of the book just now and the atmosphere just feels different. Part of this disconnect could be that this adaptation originated in France and has been translated back into English from whatever version of show more the novel the French author might have been working from.

Still, the gist of the book is here, and this adaptation may entice some readers to seek out the original, which would be a good thing. show less

Un album splendide et saisissant. Trois soldats noirs américains casernés dans le sud de l'Angleterre au moment du débarquement de juin 44 réussissent à être envoyés au front pour une mission invraisemblable : récupérer le premier drapeau américain, brodé à la demande de Georges Washington en 1776, qui cache un lourd secret relatif aux noirs américains. Au travers du tragique destin des ces trois soldats et de leur quête, les auteurs relatent avec beaucoup d'intensité le show more problème racial aux Etats-unis qui sous-tend l'histoire de ce pays depuis son indépendance et qui malgré des avancées significatives demeurent malheureusement très présent. Un dessin puissant, précis, avec une mise en couleur très sobre, par monochrome, qui augmente l'intensité et la violence du scénario. Les éditions Dupuis au travers de la collection Aire Libre nous habitue à publier très régulièrement de très beaux album. Cinq branches de coton noir le confirme magnifiquement. show less

In de eerste strip Het bloed van de Mississippi wordt in de colofon Mark Twain nog vermeld, in het tweede deel Twee vrolijke katten op een gloeiend hete trein is zijn naam niet meer terug te vinden en ook in het verhaal zelf ontbreekt, behalve de terugkoppelingen naar het eerste deel, iedere verwijzing naar Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

Cuzor en Thirault nemen enkele kernelementen - de naam van het personage Finn, de vaderdronkaard, de vlucht langs de Mississippi, ... -, verplaatsen die 100 show more jaar in de tijd en doen er ook voor de rest min of meer hun eigen ding mee. Ze schilderen het racisme en de armoede uit die tijd (de jaren '20 en '30 in de zuiderse staten van Amerika) - en even tussendoor: ze zitten daarmee eigenlijk perfect op koers om in volgende delen enkele boeken van bijvoorbeeld John Steinbeck te verwerken (en eens ze zover zijn, waarom niet de reeks helemaal doortrekken tot de Rabbit-romans van John Updike?) - zoals Twain dat deed voor de jaren 1830.
Hucks kompaan, de slaaf Jim, wordt de zwarte arbeider Charley Williams, wiens grote droom het is een bluesgitarist te worden. Op het einde van deel 2, na vele vele avonturen, trekt Williams naar Memphis in de hoop een plaat te kunnen maken. Huck gaat, in de zoektocht naar zijn overleden broer Tom, terug naar huis en wacht daar wellicht tot deel 3 aanvangt.

Er zit een knipoog in naar Jack Kerouac, de titel van het 2de deel verwijst natuurlijk naar Cat on a Hot Tin Roof van Tennessee Williams, en voor kenners van Amerikaanse literatuur valt er misschien wel nog wat meer uit te halen. Dat doet het beste hopen voor de volgende delen,

... maar dat de link met Mark Twain zo dun is, is ook jammer. Half hoopte ik toch dat ik die langgerekte schelmenroman niet meer hoefde herlezen, en dat ik door middel van deze stripreeks voldoende kruit zou hebben om althans de belangwekkendste scènes terug tot leven te roepen.

De reeks is niet uitzonderlijk, maar heeft veel aandacht voor details (in de stijl van Blueberry, maar iets gladder), en - eens de Mark Twain-fan in je zijn teleurstelling te boven is gekomen - best een vlotlopend verhaal. Naar de volgende delen kijken we niet meteen reikhalzend uit, maar enige nieuwsgierigheid zullen ze wel wekken. En omdat we deel 1 en 2 al hebben, is er - wiskundig gezien - geen enkel reden om ook deel 3, 4, 5, .... niet aan te schaffen.
