This book sets out what the author believes to be positive reasons for protesting his faith, and also negative reasons for protesting against the Roman Catholic Church. In the former, he proclaims the primacy of scripture, but also Protestant approaches to the church and the dominical sacraments. In the latter, he refutes apostolic succession, papal infallibility, the cult of Mary, transubstantiation, and the belief that the Vulgate translation is definitive. Nevertheless, he describes some show more of the good points of the Roman Catholic Church. However, he concludes that the Roman Catholic Church cannot alone dictate the terms of Christian unity. This was all written pre-Vatican II, and it would be interesting how he would view the Catholic Church today in the light of a greater openness to other Christians. This book is a book of its time, and is of historical interest. show less
