Barbara Ray (1) (1928–2005)

I discovered this book in the Guildhall bookshop, and purchased it on the strength of local interest. In that respect, it more than satisfies, but what surprised me most was the lively and engaging style, easily on a par with much more mainstream historical writing. The history of Chingford is covered in some depth, and in a manner which conveys much of the local character - whilst also being alive to the broader social and economic trends shaping this little corner of East London. show more Thoroughly engaging. show less
