Not really a book to read. Wonderful vintage plates of Victorian houses from the 1870-80's. Many of the pictures are actually from the time that the building/house in question is under construction. Seems to concentrate on NY state and New England, with a few from the Midwest thrown in. Covers commercial building, private residences, some interiors and suburban houses. Most are very gothic in style and a few Moorish and other styles as well. Has an introduction that is period dissertations show more on style from England and Europe where it seems they are turning their noses up at American style. The last part of the book has good detailed descriptions of the plates but would have been more useful in the main body of the work. Again wonderful to flip through and see the pictures, but not really a book to read. show less
