I've always wanted to be able to 'read' Russian script, even without understanding what is written. Just to know how to pronounce the letters would have been enough.
This book teaches you how to read Russian. And teaches you the basics of the Russian language as well. I was surprised how many words are really a lot like English or French or other European languages. I had always thought Russian was completely unintelligible, and for the most it probably still is, but at least I can read the show more words now and even understand some of them. show less

Teach Yourself Russian Complete Course Package (Book 2 CDs) (TY: Complete Courses) by Daphne M. West
Teach Yourself is the best guide out there for learning another language. There may be better guides, but you can bet they're more expensive. There are also severely over-rated guides like Pimsluer, who will as promised teach you to converse in another language quick and easy, so long as your idea of learning a language means using eight cds to learn four paragraphs worth of dialogue.
The Russian guide is severely lacking in grammar guides, audio exercises, but is still quite helpful. You show more will have to learn Cyrillic to proceed with it though. show less
