Although regarded as the standard in the field of pre-famine, Irish Protestant emigration, Dickson's work suffers a lack of readability. Dickson devotes huge amounts of effort and pages in the pursuit of exact numbers of emigrants, per ship, per sailing. The details he runs to death seem far less interesting or important than larger issues he ignores.
