An environmental odyssey : people, pollution, and politics in the life of a practical scientist by Merril Eisenbud
Prosaic and pedestrian but fascinating. Eisenbud set 'safe' exposure limits for workers and communities to toxic gases, poisons, X-rays and nuclear fall out before the 1950s. He argues that the modern environmental movement - which he recognises as the reason for his later career - now goes too far, requiring huge expenditure on reducing industrial emissions when these funds would be better spent on other priorities.
