This book starts with a nostalgic look back on the author's childhood in the 'Ganga-Jamuna tahseeb" of eastern UP, and then goes on to discuss the changing relations between Muslims and Hindus in post-Independence India. The author lays before us the deeply felt contradictions and difficulties of the progressive, highly civilized Muslim gentlefolk in an environment that is being increasingly polarized by the cynical realities of electoral politics. Most of his analysis works, except for the show more last part on the Kashmir problem, which probably needs much more space to properly unpick. The book brings out the urgent necessity for us to reverse the disastrous hurtling to communal enmity, and the need to provide ample space and encouragement for the civilized and forward-looking sections in all communities, so that India can convincingly present a robust working example of the multi-cultural world that will be the only salvation of the future. show less
