I first learned of Veronica Franco from the semi-true movie Dangerous Beauty. She is a fascinating character and I was eager to learn more about her. This proved an excellent source. This work not only includes samples of her writing, but a detailed biography of her life and times. Worth reading if you are interested in the 16th century Italy, courtesans or poets.
We danced our youth in a dreamed-of city
Venice... Paradise, Proud and Pretty
We lived for love and lust and beauty
Pleasure then our only duty
Floating then 'twixt heaven and earth
and drunk on plenty's blessed mirth
We thought ourselves eternal then
Our glory sealed by God's own pen
But paradise, we found, is always frail.
Against man's fear will always fail.
