The fifth instalment of the Elbmarsch crime series featuring Frida Paulsen and Bjarne Haverkorn begins with a hanged man with a message dangling around his neck. It contains a confession of having given false testimony in a court case years ago. Haverkorn, who is in his last year of service before retirement, still remembers the old case.
Farmer Cord Johannsen was convicted of murdering his two sons and his wife and has been in prison ever since. Was a mistake made during the investigation, show more which took place over 20 years ago? That would mean a major judicial scandal.
In order to re-examine the old case and at the same time track down the murderer of the hanged witness, a new member is assigned to the Itzehoe homicide squad: Leonard Bootz, a former SWAT officer. This is the first change in the series. While Haverkorn is transferred to a cold case team in Kiel, Bootz literally takes his place.
Frida Paulsen is not at all happy that the newcomer, who immediately made himself unpopular with her with a precocious comment, is now supposed to share her office and that her well-liked colleague Haverkorn is otherwise occupied for the time being. However, Frida Paulsen quickly discovers something she has in common with Bootz.
Two police colleagues who can't stand each other and prefer to follow their own intuition rather than listen to their boss – conflicts are inevitable. However, with their special intuition, the two may also have exactly what it takes to uncover discrepancies in the old triple murder case. In any case, they have to get along, for better or worse, to find out who really murdered the Johannsen family back then.
Because that is the demand that is made unmistakably by the hanged witness and the message, at the latest when another witness from the trial against Cord Johannsen is found hanged.

Mordsand is the fourth crime thriller in the series centred around Frida Paulsen and Bjarne Haverkorn. Once again, Romy Fölck takes us to the Elbe marshes, where a skeleton is found in the mud, bound hand and foot. A short time later, a controversial building contractor is found dead on a neighbouring island, also tied up. Frida, Bjarne and their team from the Itzeho police investigate. Dr Torben Kielmann also plays a key role - not only in identifying the skeleton, but also in Frida's show more life. This case pushes both of them to their health limits.
A big plus point in the crime novels in this series has always been the skilful depiction of the landscape along the Elbe. Fölck has always been able to depict the atmosphere by the river, in the orchards and in the flat marshland so vividly that it is easy to transport yourself there while listening. This time, too, she manages to vividly convey autumn in this region: The damp cold, the rain showers, the musty smell at the water's edge and the loneliness of the Elbe islands create a great atmosphere.

After her last fall, Frida Paulsen is recovering in the Elbmarsch when she receives a cry for help from her old friend Jo. Last night Jo found the body of a woman in the march and is now convinced that she is suspected of murder. Shortly afterwards it disappears without a trace. Worried, Frida goes in search of her friend. The trail leads to a lonely house on the Holnis peninsula, which the islanders only call the Bluthus (blood house). Many years ago a family was cruelly executed there - show more the perpetrator was never found.
The story switches between the present time and the time many years ago. Frida also learns a lot about her friend Jo.
While Frida puts himself more and more in danger, her work partner fights for his daughter's life and ignores Frida's calls for help until it is almost too late.
It was a great read again. Exciting from the first to the last page and it really grabbed me. I am glad that the author has already written two more volumes in this series.
