This is a serious piece of scholarship by a leading literary critic of the era. Gibbon was Yeats' second cousin and knew the man. Gibbon was not interested in magic and therefore favored the early poetry over the later and that is okay! What he contributes here is a first hand knowledge about the man and how he acted and interacted with others within the context of his life and work. It shows Yeats, not unsympathetically, at his most vulnerable and at times petty best and worst, I think this show more is a valuable contribution to Yeats' legend and it is unfortunate that it is on so few bibliographies. It was considered important enough that Yeats' own publisher published this work. show less
