This is just a lovely, lovely book. It's a great how-to resource for anyone interested in learning just how to properly apply makeup, but it's also so much more. Aucoin's personality shines throughout the text; it's easy to see how much love he holds for makeup and for beauty in all its forms. I love his attitude. Aucoin focuses on bringing out your true self while having fun with the process and experimenting. He stresses that the only limits are those we give ourselves, and that readers show more should feel free to try all sorts of different things with the makeup techniques he sets forth. This was a heartwarming, inspiring read as well as a great instruction manual. show less

Aucoin is sheer talent who wants to share with women the secrets of makeup. He doesn't seem to be interested in overly colorful looks or radical extremes. This book is a great teaching tool from the master of the field. The diagrams and tools are less about brands and more about technique. By the end, I did feel as though secrets were shared.
On a multitide of recommnedations, I picked this up to try and learn how to do eye makeup properly. And learned that there is no normal, proper or right way, much to my relief. :) Very clear diagrams, lots of different looks, and some amazing transformations on well known (and unknown) faces. Loved the fact that he included a drag queen and a businessman, and his mom and sisters. :) I was a bit surprised to see a section on plastic surgery in a make up tips book, but he handled it neutrally show more and gave some good tips on how to choose a surgeon. Looking forward to trying out the looks from actresses from the 1930's to '50's. show less
