Ishigure Ikuro

A succinct and clear exploration of the opening phase of the game of Go. A lot of its content flew above me --for instance, I can intuitively see the author's point about how a certain group of stones is advantageous, but I don't know how to capitalize on it, and the book does not help me in this sense. In any case, this is a problem of my own Go level, not of the book's exposition.

A nice intro to opening game theory, though I would have appreciated some more explanation on certain points. Judging by the puzzles at the back of the book, I would say I got around 70% of the lessons, but I suspect this is a book that will benefit from a re-read or two as I gain more experience.

While I feel that "Opening Theory Made Easy" is a better book than this one, I still read "In the Beginning" twice. There is a lot of fundamental information to be gained from it. It's well written, with clear examples.It ends with a series of 10 problems which are graded on a sliding scale. You can get partial credit for playing 2nd- or 3rd- best moves, which are all explained.

De Elementary Go Series gaat in een zevental boekjes dieper in op een aantal belangrijke aspecten van Go. Het is niet noodzakelijk om de boekjes in een bepaalde volgorde te lezen omdat ze allemaal een ander onderwerp behandelen.

Deel 1 gaat over het begin van de Go-partij, maar niet direct over Joseki's (daar gaat deel 2 over).
De eerste helft van dit boekje gaat in een twaalftal sub-hoofdstukken kort in op verschillende openingszetten en andere veelvoorkomende situaties zoals invasies.
De show more tweede helft van het boekje laat in 9 concepten zien hoe je Go kan spelen. Elk concept word kort besproken en kan je zien als een goede inleiding tot een vervolgboek over dat concept.
Al met al een leuk boekje dat je inzicht geeft in de veelvoud van mogelijkheden van Go en een goede inleiding tot tal van vervolgboeken die er zijn over de verschillende aangesneden onderwerpen. show less
