Robertson Davies and Tyrone Guthrie collaborated on this account of the founding of Canada's Stratford Festival in 1953 and its first season when two Shakespearean plays were famously performed in a tent. Davies contributed a thoughtful analysis of the plays, the costuming, the acting and staging. It made me wish I had been able to take one of his courses when he taught at University of Toronto, but it also made me feel that I had just attended a lecture or several given by a kind and show more instructive professor. The illustrations by Grant Macdonald, like slides in a well-organized lecture, contributed immensely to the whole effect. show less
