Short biography
Not much biographical information Mary Masters is known. Although some sources give her dates as 1706-1759, she may have been born as early as 1694 and died as late as 1771. She appears to have been a self-taught poet. According to Samuel Johnson's biographer James Boswell, Mary Masters was a friend of Johnson, who may have helped edit some of her verses. She is also linked with Edmund Cave, editor of The Gentleman’s Magazine. Her book Poems on Several Occasions (1733) was one of the first volumes of poems in English by a woman with her name appearing on the title page.

“Hell’s Gates” is a story about Walmart. Just kidding; I couldn’t resist. Seriously, though, the writing reminds me of 1980s horror maven Ruby Jean Jensen’s books, which is a good thing. There is a similar creeping sense of horror and a timelessness to the story that is refreshingly free of modern constraints despite the contemporary setting. Masters slowly builds up the atmosphere to a chilling level, and while there is some profanity and a few sexual situations, these are not show more overbearing—a rare find in the adult horror genre. A multitude of characters, both past and present, contribute to the plot, each credible and relatable. This is a great read for horror fans, whether it’s Halloween or not! show less
WOW does not even begin to describe HELL'S GATE BY MARY MASTERS! I give it a ten out of ten on the old creepy story meter! From the first page to the very end HELL'S GATE takes you into a town where when you say "The devil made me do it" is taken literally. I haven't been this scared reading a book since Stephen King's Salem's Lot hit the shelves many moons ago.

Set in a little town where things just start falling apart piece by piece and things literally go to the devil, the "good guys" of show more the story are trying to save the day and the devil wants their souls along with the rest of the towns.

I won this book and agreed to give it an honest review. OMG, I hope there's a a sequel as I surely want to know MORE! Chris Samuels decided he'd had enough of big city and took a job as the sheriff of a small so that he could raise his family without worrying about crime. Living in the Bronx, he;d seen more than his share of grisly deaths and he thought he could get use to petty crimes on the way to his retirement, until Jason Trent returned to town and turned Mastema's mansion into a show more nursing home. Then strange deaths occurred all over town and the home that no amount of science could explain! show less
