I just discovered these perfect stories for 7-10, independent readers or families together, and good for boys too. 3.5 rounded up because they're a quick & satisfying joy to read.
The themes of finding your own path and of being courageous, honorable, and responsible are not subtly hinted at, but rather obvious, as Rhianna does have a lot to learn about her special powers and she thinks about these things. But neither are they didactic books, rather, they are full of life and adventure, and show more even a little mayhem, and even some humor.

The only thing about the first one is that the dragon appears so briefly. Still, it's more than just an icon but rather is a complex character... I wouldn't be surprised if Luckett had developed enough of a backstory for it that we could have a whole 'nother book focused just on dragons in this world. show less

An unobjectionable children's fantasy about a girl who's failing out of magic school, but then finds out that it wasn't because she was stupid and untalented, but rather because she was *too* talented. I don't think it's really the right message to send to most children. Most of them don't fail because they're "too smart" for what they're doing. The book was nice, though.
This one is slightly more sophisticated and intense. RL4 8-12. And it ends, but also promises more... I wish there were more!

Do try to solve the riddle; it's well-crafted and challenging but not impossible.

Theoretically a reader could start here, as explanations are tucked into the narrative, but this really is a trilogy to be read in sequence.

Ib this one I particularly loved the method found to defeat the iron dogs (science does have a place in a magical world!) and the reason that the person poisoned was cured. show less
