I would use this book as a read aloud to encourage my students to love one another. The animal friends are trying to make one of their friends smile, and it would bring a positive energy into the classroom.
Good Night, Mouse is a story based on friendship and patience. The story is short, sweet, and mildly confusing. The story is easy to understand for an adult, but quite confusing for a child. The language is simple and easy to understand for an older child. Younger children will need defining terms to discuss. For example. "dusky shadow, deep and dim", would be a confusing statement for a young child to comprehend. In the story, each friend has an idea of what will help mouse sleep. Every show more friend has a different idea making it difficult for mouse to settle down. All of the characters are realistic animals and easily identifiable. I enjoyed the story, more the second reading than the first. The overall message of the story is to do whatever it takes to be a good friend. show less
Summary: All of mouse's friends try cheering him up with things they like to do and none of them are working. The only thing that worked was at the end when one of them gave him a simple hug.
Review: Great and adorable story. It introduces kids to a lot of animals and what they like to do. Illustrations were intriguing as well.
I did not like this book. I think it teaches children that there is always a sad friend and there is no explanation for why that friend is sad but to continue trying to cheer up your friends which is an interesting lesson to be teaching children.
