A charming, likeable work based on the popular French play. Reading musicals always lacks something, because music isn't meant to be read, but heard. If you have seen the show, it helps a bit, because you might remember the tune enough to hum it a bit. That said, this doesn't read as well as it plays, because so much of it relies on spectacle, but the gist of the story is still intact. Probably should be read by most theatre students, because it has become such a classic in musical theatre.
I love this show. It is a bit convoluted compared to the play version but it holds it's own in the world of Musical Theatre!
saw jerry herman himself sing special lyrics he penned for the occasion in june 1998 of a 2-evening tribute concert/testimonial to the april and may 1961 concerts at carnegie hall by JUDY GARLAND. to the tune of 'that's entertainment' .. herman wrote lyrics that started out (and are included in this sweet publication)
"A note that is really a note
makes the song that the sonwriter wrote
seem sublime when it comes form the throat
of judy garland"
and then there's the rest of his body of lyrics. show more charming. show less
