Being a choice of aphorisms from a 'wit and wisdom' style newspaper column which was popular a century ago. The reflections concern themselves largely with love, courtship, and marriage. At the distance of a hundred years, the hit rate for wit is decent, but not great; wisdom makes an occasional appearance. Many readers will be put off by the extremely anachronistic sex roles on offer, and the author's viewpoint is jaundiced, which is also not for everyone. The book will pass muster with show more lovers of the quaint who enjoy a short visit to the way our forebears looked at domestic life. show less
