NEVER MIND THE HAPPY by Marc Shaiman is both a tell all book and a tell who book.
When Mark Shaiman was six or seven years old, he overheard his older sister’s piano lesson. Immediately afterward, he played the entire lesson by ear. He soon began taking his own lessons.
Music was to become the story of his life. He dropped out of high school when he was 16 to concentrate on music and it quickly became his life’s work.
The book mentions all of his theater, movie, and television works as show more well as the people with whom he had worked including Bette Midler, Billy Crystal, Martin Short, Harry Connick, Jr., and dozens more. He also was nominated for and won (and lost) multiple awards over the years. He also discusses his close ties with the GLBTG community.
But the most interesting parts of the book are his descriptions of what goes into composing and writing the right music and words used in the plays and movies, fitting them in —this includes the background music for movies—, trying to satisfy producers and writers, matching them to the performers’ abilities, getting past the censors, etc.
That sets the book apart from the typical tell all biography.

Oh, the 60's. This show is just so CUTE. That's why I love it. It doesn't take itself seriously, at all, and yet the story is just on this side of too sweet. Always a good pick-me-up play.
