Short biography
Nannie Tiffany grew up on a plantation in the South. In 1882, she married Walter Alderson, a cattleman, and went with him to southeastern Montana to start a ranch. Her popular memoirs, "A Bride Goes West," published in 1942, provide a moving account of daily life, hardships, and survival as a pioneer wife. Most of the book describes the time before Nannie's husband was killed in a freak accident and she was left to raise their four children by herself.
