California Indian anthropologist, editor, and author, Sylva B. Vane passed away in her sleep at home in Menlo Park, CA on Tuesday, July 14. She was predeceased by her husband Arthur Vane. Sylvia partnered with Dr. Lowell John Bean from 1978 to her death as vice president of Cultural Systems Research Inc. (CSRI), a cultural resource consulting firm specializing in California Indians. She was president of Ballena Press from 1981 to 2005 and edited and published academic anthropology books primary on western North America. The anthropology and archeology reports and books written by her and Lowell Bean for CSRI made them the preeminent authorities on Southern California Indian culture.
