A sample of essays from Harper's Magazine's "Easy Chair"--a long-running monthly column which began in 1851; The last in this book dates from 1973; the series continues to this day. Six authors are represented here; they had different personalities and different interests. The collection's interesting just for that.

That said, some sections are far more interesting than others. Bernard DeVoto and John Fischer I knew already I'd find interesting, and unsurprisingly I enjoyed the writings of show more William Dean Howells. George William Curtis, previously unfamiliar, fits well with those three. The others, not so much.

A good book.
