- A career sailor, he volunteered for submarines in 1932 and became one of only two Royal Navy officers to command submarines throughout the entire Second World War. He retired from the Navy in 1948 and subsequently married Anita Leslie, author and member of the Anglo-Irish aristocracy. They farmed in Galway and were both avid fox hunters.
Hill was intent on sailing around the globe single-handedly: he tried twice, unsuccessfully, in 1968 and 1969 but completed the feat in 1970-1973. He was a keen mountaineer and alpinist and took up hang-gliding in his late seventies. - Nationality
