This cable-TV film is very average. The story rather hooks our attention, as well as the performances of Timothy Hutton, Elizabeth Peña and Joan Plowright. The screenplay focuses mostly the Ames family, their financial problems and the lack of perspective in the career of Aldrich Ames, and the viewer may end the movie with some sympathy for him. Maybe this is the flaw in the plot, since the guy indeed was a disgusting traitor of his country for money.

I did enjoy it and was never bored, the pacing is just right and it never slows down or drags. Hoskins is excellent as always as is Helen Mirren as his girlfriend.
My complaint is that parts of it get confusing, very convoluted and at times you ask yourself what is going on? The confusion leaves this a very good but marred film.
