Clothing the Past: Surviving Garments from Early Medieval to Early Modern Western Europe by Elizabeth Coatsworth
Despite the title, this is largely a look at surviving garments from the later Middle Ages, with a handful from the earlier medieval period and one or two pieces from the early 1500s. Elizabeth Coatsworth and Gale Owen-Crocker have pulled together an informative and representative overview of medieval garments and accessories, grouped into chapters such as leg coverings, priestly garments, and accessories. Each garment's history, dimensions, and construction details are discussed, together show more with at least one high quality colour photo. The authors weren't able to examine all of the items in person (unsurprisingly, given likely conservation concerns), and it would have been nice to see garments from across a broader swathe of medieval Europe. Still, a informative and aesthetically pleasing volume to dip into. show less
