I was told these belonged to my grandfather but I never thought to ask which one, the piano player or the pawnshop keeper. Candidates for rebinding (covers falling off, one looks as though it has stopped a bullet). From the title page: "being a popular description of the characteristics, manners and customs of the principal varieties of the human family." The engravings are splendid, the text is written from a righteous Victorian viewpoint and to be taken with a large pinch of salt.
